This week you will be submitting a rough draft of your term project. This should be a 2-3 page paper that discusses the real science of the topic you selected based on the book The Martian. Include information on future advancements or research on the topic. Be sure to include at least 3 citations (not including the novel).
Use the following outline to help with the construction of your paper:
Introduction: Define your topic and how it is related to the novel The Martian.
Real Science of Topic: This will be the bulk of your paper. Write about the real science related to your topic and include your citations. You will want to include background information on the topic and current research related to the topic.
Future Advancement: Discuss the future of your topic. What questions do scientists still need to research? What is still unknown related to your topic? Are there any future research projects related to your topic?
Impact on Society: Conclude with how this topic has an impact on society (or will have an impact in the future). If possible, relate the topic back to the novel.
Your final draft will be graded using the Term Project Paper Rubric. It may be helpful to review this rubric when working on your rough draft.
Remember that this is just a rough draft. If you are having difficulty with any aspect of this paper, your instructor will provide feedback. You will earn full credit on this assignment by submitting your rough draft. The goal of this assignment is to provide feedback on your paper that you apply toward your final draft.

Week 7: Introduction
What Does It Take to Leave Space?
“You want to wake up in the morning and think the future is going to be great—and that’s what being a spacefaring civilization is all about. It’s about believing in the future and thinking that the future will be better than the past. And I can’t think of anything more exciting than going out there and being among the stars.” – Elon Musk
This week and the weeks that follow, we’ll be discussing topics related to space and space exploration. Before we can discuss space travel, we first must consider how to leave Earth. You’ll review some historic space launches as you consider what it takes to leave Earth. This week’s assignment will have you discuss why rockets are used for space launches and not cannons.
Finally, you’ll be submitting your rough draft of your Martian term project. There will be no chapter readings from The Martian and no science fiction movie this week to allow you time to research and write your rough draft.
