Utilization of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) for fall prevention program
Research has shown that multifactorial interventions, including patient education, environmental modifications, and staff training, can significantly reduce fall rates among hospitalized patients. The inpatient setting hospital unit adopted a comprehensive fall prevention program based on these findings and included regular staff training on fall prevention strategies and environmental modifications such as non-slip flooring and adequate lighting in the patient rooms. Patient education on the importance of using call lights and assistive devices was also emphasized in the interventions. Routine fall risk assessments for all patients were done every 12 hours and with a change in care status. Collaboration among nurses, physicians, physical therapists, and environmental services ensured a comprehensive strategy. Regular audits and feedback helped maintain program adherence and effectiveness. The unit saw a significant reduction in patient falls, improving patient safety and reducing healthcare costs.
Management of chronic pain without standardized EBP guidelines
The primary intervention in a post-operative unit remained pharmacological, with minimal integration of physical therapy, psychological support, or alternative pain management techniques. Despite evidence supporting the use of multidisciplinary approaches and non-pharmacological interventions for chronic pain management, the hospital continued to rely heavily on opioid prescriptions. The patient had a longer length of stay due to complications of uncontrolled pain management which also led to patient dissatisfaction. Reliance solely on medication without considering holistic, evidence-based strategies led to suboptimal outcomes. The lack of willingness from both staff and the surgery team to adopt new, evidence-based practices was a great barrier to change. this situation could have been managed better with more staff education and an interdisciplinary approach and plan for pain management.
