In this assignment, you will illustrate & analyze 18 cinematic techniques and narrative elements. For each term, you will:
Create your own screen grab example as a visual illustration of the concept.
Accurately label each example and list them in the same order as the chart below.
Describe how your example demonstrates the technique or element.
Analyze why this technique or element was used, how it impacts the meaning (of the character, scene, or entire text), and how it enhances, deepens, or contributes to the overall narrative of your text.
Throughout, you must use your own words and ideas.
scoll down to the Troubleshooting guide at the bottom if you are having technology issues (i.e. Netflix fades to black on the pause)

Notes
Cite:
You do not have to cite the picture, the time stamp, or the Artifact (unless the image is unclear or ambiguous)
Your written explanation will be in YOUR OWN words so you do not need to cite a source
If for some reason you do have outside wording (StudioBinder, IMDb, etc) it must be limited to a single use and cited.
You do not need a Works Cited page
You may NOT share images or download them from the Internet.
You may re-use your own screengrabs more than once.
Presentation:
Use PowerPoint (or similar slideware) to best exemplify a project like this that combines visual components with bite-sized, bulleted text.
Number and breakdown the terms in the same order presented above (#1-18)
You are evaluated on the content & quality (of analysis), formatting, mechanics, and design of your Presentation
Examples
Example: Mixed Submissions & Texts [PDF]
The example is for demonstration only. These are a collection of random example SLIDES rather than an example of a completed, singular Project. There is repetition and omission of terms & concepts that you should not have. In all cases, the slides may not be perfect, accurate, or reflect current assignment goals. Build your own design, approach, and analysis.
Troubleshooting
#1 Fix: Change your Browser (Firefox or Safari or Chrome or Edge).
Changing to Firefox will fix the issue *most* of the time. (If you don’t have Firefox, many of the free Campus Computer Labs do)
#2. Disable Hardware Acceleration in your web browser [GUIDES]
Switch from Netflix App to a Browser (Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Edge) and then on to www.netflix.com
Safari & Mac users tend to experience the most issues, so usually switch away from them.
Update your Browser (or go back to an earlier version?).
Change computer/operating systems (i.e. try a PC or a Mac).
Switch to a computer… or over to a tablet or phone.
Use a Campus Lab computer (the computers in the Library are excellent!).
Update your computer.
Use the Windows Game Bar: Windows Key + Alt + G [GUIDE] or Mac Screenrecord [GUIDE]. Use the photo function rather than the video capture (though you can insert video of scenes as well or instead). The Snipping tool can grab video (or images)
Install third-party screenshot tools (i.e. Fireshot). Google “screenshot” tools for your browser.
Search on Google or YouTube for fixes or techniques (based on your various devices, versions, etc).
Try Netflix Moments on your cell phone [LINK]
Download the episode or movie and then switch to Airplane mode,
If nothing else works, find the same scene on YouTube and grab the image there.
If THAT doesn’t work, use a TV, pause your screen, and take the best, straightest, truest, least glare-y, photo you can.
Once it works…
Do Print Screen (using various keyboard commands, or in some browsers by right-clicking and selecting Take a Screen Shot)
Use Snipping tool (Windows: search Snipping Tool. Mac: Command + Shift + 4)
NOTES:
All use of Generative AI (such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Grammarly, Bard, etc) is strictly prohibited.
Any work written by others must be cited. Any unattributed work in your paper can be considered plagiarism. This includes both “copying” AND paraphrasing.
You may not use tools (such as Grammarly, Scribbr, ChatGPT) to reword, revise, or re/write your paper.
