PT. 2
media selection – Kendrick Lamar – “HUMBLE.” and Kendrick Lamar – “Alright”
For this exercise, select 2-3 different media artifacts that are trying to persuade you to change your attitude or behavior about a single subject. Example subjects that have many artifacts across several channels would be a popular product, service, politician, or organization that are attempting to sway your habits. In other words, one might engage this exercise by examining persuasive appeals used by NIKE in an advertisement on YouTube, a commercial during the Superbowl, and a billboard positioned in Times Square. Alternatively, one might use this exercise to consider how a particular subject like BODY IMAGE is engaged visually in a Dove Skincare commercial, a Billie Eilish music video, and a TikTok influencer.
From the perspective of the persuasive theories we’ve engaged across the persuasive communication unit, respond to the following:
Provide a quick introduction where you introduce the subject you are analyzing across these media artifacts and describe what these artifacts are
The Rhetoric
How does this subject appeal to the Aristotelian proofs in one of the media artifacts you have selected?
Are these appeals effective? What are these appeals attempting to compel audiences to think about?
Dramatism
Using one of the artifacts you’ve chosen, describe the presence of the pentadic elements within the artifact. What two pentadic features are most important to the persuasive goals of the persuader?
Narrative Paradigm Theory
Using one of the artifacts you’ve chosen, describe the story behind the artifact? What audiences is this story directed toward? Does this story achieve narrative fidelity and narrative coherence and why?
Semiotics
What symbols are especially important to the nature of your artifacts? What is the meaning behind them and what message do they signal to audiences? How do these symbols connect to some external culture or customs related to the primary subject across all of your media artifacts?
