Begin by conducting research about your selected culture.
What are relevant historical moments? Leading historical, social, and political figures? Common misconceptions?
Appropriate norms and roles? Social and cultural taboo’s? etc. You do not need to respond to each of these
questions, the idea here is to be informed about your selected culture going into your engagement period (and to
inform you reader).
The purpose of this research is at least two-fold: 1) to demonstrate respect for the person(s) you’ll be engaging
with–by conducting background research it demonstrates you care enough to learn basic information about the
culture prior to the engagement activities and 2) to make the most effective use of your engagement time—you’ll
be more informed and better-equipped to observe and ask thoughtful questions and follow-up questions once
you’ve conduced background research.
Next, prepare a preview of your upcoming cultural analysis. This preview should include the following (please
label each of these):
(1) A summary (1-2 pages) of the findings from your background research
(2) The culture you’ve selected for this learning opportunity and a statement about why you selected this culture.
(3) The name and contact information (phone and e-mail) of the person or persons you are engaging in this
learning opportunity with.
(4) A schedule for your meeting/engagement time with your selected culture (equal to at least 4 hours). This
should include activities you’ll observe or engage in, locations, and a brief statement or purpose (i.e. what
you’d like to get out of the engagement period)
(5) A list of at least 20 questions you have for the person you are engaging in the culture analysis with. Note: you
can include more questions, and questions of your own interest as well, but at least 20 should include a
concept, theory, or key idea from our course materials. Please underline the concept and cite the source it
came from. You are welcome to access any materials from our course or other credible sources (cited).
