Can you compare and contrast different ways of communicating between characters with different aspects to their identities or in different contexts?

What aspect of identity will you be considering in your analysis, and how does it shape and inform the dynamics of communication in the example you’ve selected? What is the context and setting of this conversation, and how does it represent a piece of real-world interactions that you are familiar with? What have you read for this class to better understand the communication and language patterns you see in this example conversation? What patterns do you expect to see given what you have been learning or experienced? What patterns do you actually observe in the example you chose to analyze? What do these patterns mean, and how do they relate to larger patterns or assumptions we make about communication in similar or different contexts? Can you compare and contrast different ways of communicating between characters with different aspects to their identities or in different contexts?

Read: Use the information already part of this class. Pick an article (or two) or a module topic that highlights patterns of language use that interest you and that you want to analyze within a recorded example conversation. I’ve gathered several articles from class (or related to class) that you might want to work with: Patterns of Language – Article examples. Some of these authors may have other essays you want to use. And you may also find other articles beyond this class, but please discuss these with me first. The Cypress library has tools to help you find peer-reviewed articles as well.
Select an example conversation to analyze: You can either record a conversation or find an existing video/audio recording (youtube, home videos, podcasts or radio interviews, movie clips, etc.) as your example to use for this assignment. The conversation(s) should include three or more individuals talking and be a total of 15 minutes of interaction. You may want to select several shorter segments of conversation from a longer piece, for example, three scenes from the same TV episode focusing on three characters’ interactions at different points in the story arc. I’m happy to discuss ideas to make sure you pick material that will be good to work with.
Organize: There will be options on how to share what you’ve learned about these following questions/points, so for now, just make sure you think through and are organizing your information and ideas about these topics:
Explain your analysis perspective and the questions you set out to investigate.
Connect your ideas about the use of language in your example to your model paper – briefly summarize the key ideas in your model paper and cite the data and argument it presents.
Introduce the conversation you selected – do a brief S.P.E.A.K analysis of the conversation.
State your hypothesis for what you expected to find in the conversation.
Explain your data and use quotes from the recorded segments to illustrate what someone is saying or how they are saying it. Pick examples to support your hypotheses and answer the questions you asked about your example conversation(s) and your model paper’s ideas (s).
APA citation for the paper(s) or essay(s) you summarized (APA guide Links to an external site.).
If you use or make recordings of people you know or meet in the real world (vs. using TV or film clips, or segments posted on youtube), please have everyone in the clip sign a release form: Photo Release FormLinks to an external site. form.
Please submit these along with your Part 2 Data part of the project. These documents show that you had permission to record the people for data collection purposes, but you can reassure them that no one will ever see the recording. You won’t be turning it in.
If you use a publicly available recording (or on a streaming platform), please include a link or instructions on where to find your source material in your assignment. It is fun for me to see the videos you chose to analyze.
