In this section of Musical Theatre, we will have the opportunity to see all 6 elements of theatre as defined by Greek philosopher Aristotle come to life in a modern play. Lets review those 6 elements:
The six elements are only a small part of the much longer Poetics. However, they comprise some of the most vital aspects of theatre from the whole work. They are very useful in identifying the whys and whats of theatre. His six elements included and are in order from most important to least important:
Plot
Character
Thought
Diction
Music
Spectacle
For a full review of these elements with explanations from this Unit see the Module titled Aristotle on Theatre
Links to an external site.
Watch this short video on the Golden Age of The American Musical, where they will explain how these 6 elements of theatre are brought together to create musical theatre.
Take a brief peek at what it takes, and how all these elements come together to make the hit musical Wicked.
The next Module will give you instructions on which Musical Theatre film to watch from a list, and where you can watch it.
As you watch your chosen film, identify the 6 elements at play, and how they come together to form one complete performance art piece. You will be asked to focus on just one element in the film to focus on and write an essay about it.

Musical Theatre Speeches
We know that Aristotle critically examined theatre and organized it into Unities of time and place, and broke down the 6 elements of theatre. For this assignment we will take a look at how modern theatre still incorporates these same 6 elements to produce a show. After watching a modern musical, your speech will focus on just 3 of the elements used in the show. We already know that whatever production you watch will have obvious elements 1 (plot) 2 (character) and 3 (Theme). You do not need to include these elements in your speech as we already know they are there and well developed.
