INITIAL POST EXAMPLE:
Company Name(s): Major U.S. Airlines (Delta)
Topic: Federal Mandates, Health and Safety (Dealbook: April 20th, 2022)
Industry: Commercial Travel
Why Caught my attention: The unexpected change in mask mandates is what initially drew my attention to the story. On April 20th, 2022, major U.S. airlines elected to remove mandates relating to the application of facial coverings. The decision came to fruition after a federal judge ruled in favor of no longer requiring the masks on airplanes, trains, and other forms of commercial travel. The Biden administration may elect to appeal the decision after reviewing the situation more closely. Many U.S. airlines are choosing to remove these mandates to further increase their customer base and accumulate additional profit. Commercial travel has recently become subject to an insurgence in popularity as more people are willing to travel again.
Potential ethical implications: There are several potential ethical implications that could arise from this situation.
Removing mandates relating to the application of face masks have the potential to lead to rises in COVID-19 cases. Potentially risking the health and safety of additional passengers in commercial travel is a huge ethical implication of this situation. Forcing passengers with compromised immunities to sit adjacent to individuals not wearing masks is a situation that will become a prominent issue. This will create additional problems for flight attendants that will have to deal with seating arguments in relation to mask-wearing.
Questions: Is the removal of mandates relating to facial coverings unethical?
